Hi, Folks,
We’ve
got science on our minds. Specifically, science related to the Titanic
and all things watery, float-y and sink-y. We need some materials we
need to continue our investigations next week:
plastic bottles, both 2 liter and water
drinking straws
balloons
modeling clay
any
and all “junk” that your child wants to bring in to construct a boat.
Egg cartons, milk jugs, wood scraps, shoe boxes, aluminum
foil...whatever you have around the house!
I’m
also looking for a large, clear bowl or old fish tank to use for
floating our boats and conducting more “underwater” experiments.
Here are some shots of our float/sink experiment:
The
students made many observations about which types of items float (or
are “buoyant”). Ask your child if they can name some materials that are
more or less likely to float in water. Do some things float at first,
but then sink? Can we change the shape or appearance of an object in
order to make it buoyant? Have your child consider these questions as
they choose materials for their boat.
Have a great weekend!
Amanda and Erin
